It’s about time we stop viewing conflict, confrontation and disagreement as damaging, negative and to be avoided at all costs.
The first rule of conflict resolution is to stop thinking of it as a problem. Most organisations manage it through formal procedures, disciplinaries, grievances, employment tribunals and the like. But perhaps we should be dealing with issues before they escalate to this level?
We have a tendency to avoid uncomfortable conversations, but should conflict resolution skills be part of the normal dialogue that managers have with their teams?
Mediation is seen as an alternative first port of call to resolving workplace issues and should be a core part of what it takes to be a line manager.
